Merits & Flaws

The merit and flaw system is a way for you to customize your character in a way that is unique and unlike others. Merits are ways to receive bonuses for different rolls and checks based on a certain situation. For each merit you select you will need to select a flaw to match. Merits and flaws are broken down into three categories. If you choose a category 3 merit you must choose a category 3 flaw. In addition, some merits cost build points in order to take. You can earn build points by simply playing the game.


Category 3 Merits & Flaws

Each merit from category 3 costs 500bp to choose. This will effectively limit you to making 2 choices from category 3.

Category 2 Merits & Flaws

Lone Wolf - You will receive a bonus to all rolls when in a room by yourself.

Encochlophobia - You will receive a minus to all rolls when in a room that has more than 3 people.
Claustrophile - You will receive a different bonus to all checks based on which type of room you are in. Indoors, outdoors, cave, windowed, etc. The less of the outside you can see, the greater the bonus.

Scoptic Vision - You will receive a bonus to all scan checks at night. No matter if you are indoors or outdoors.

Night Blindness - You will receive a minus to all scan checks at night. No matter if you are indoors or outdoors.
Far Sighted - You will receive a bonus to all perception checks

Brick Fisted - The quality of your attacks will increase by 1 level because your fists are hard.

Soft Fisted - The quality of your attacks will decrease by 1 level because your fists are soft.
Heavy Foot - Your kicks are hard and receive a bonus to quality when kicking someone.

Soft Kicks - Your kicks are soft and receive a minus to quality when kicking someone.
Ambidextrous - You will receive a bonus to all checks when holding/wielding more than one item.

Heavy Sleeper - You sleep heavily and without worry and receive a bonus to all checks.

Nightmares - You often have terrible nightmares of places, people and things far removed from Osgiliath. Whether these dreams are true or not, you could not say. You find it hard to get a good night's sleep with all these nightmares, and you will have small penalties to your checks due to sleep deprivation
Well Rested - When you receive rested bonuses, you receive extra because you sleep really well.
2 Steps
Haunted - You will be haunted by something that you have done in your past. It might come in the form of being unable to sleep, paranoia of it happening again, stress on relations. Either way, you will receive a negative to all rolls.
Awareness - You will receive a bonus to all perception checks because you are hyper aware of your surroundings.

Oblivious - You will receive a negative to all perception checks because you are naturally oblivious to what is happening around you.
Strong Stomach - You have a strong stomach and receive a bonus to healing checks.

Faint at Sight of Blood - You will receive a negative to all healing checks because you have a queasy stomach when it comes to medical procedures.
Nyctophilia - You thrive in the dark and will receive a bonus to all checks when the light level is under a certain brightness.

Afraid of the Dark - You are afraid of the dark and will receive a negative to all checks when the light level is under a certain brightness.
Brave - You are not afraid of confrontation and face it head on, receiving a bonus to all hostile rolls.

Attractive - You are attractive which brings favor from anyone you interact with. IN fact, others actually treat you a bit differently and gives you a bonus to all friendly rolls.

Ugly - You are ugly and do not receive favor from anyone. In fact, others actually treat you a bit differently and give you a minus to all friendly rolls.
Poison Resistant - You have something in your system that makes you specifically resistant to poisons and are more likely to survive being poisoned.

Combat Paralysis- You will receive a heavy malus to all checks when in combat.
Speedster - You will move faster than everyone else.

Infection Resistant - You will receive a bonus when checks are made against infections.
2 Steps
Infection Prone - You will receive a negative when checks are made against infection.
Neat Stitches - You are neat and tidy when performing surgery. Thus, you will provide bonuses to recovery. You can only choose this merit if you have chosen medicine as a skill.
1 Degree
Sloppy Surgeon - You are sloppy when performing surgery. Thus, you will provide negatives to recovery bonus. You can only choose this flaw if you have chosen medicine as a skill.
Will to Live - You have a strong will to live. Thus, your brain and heart function will operate with a bonus and you will suffer less from hypoxia.

Death Wish - You are actively seeking to die. Thus, your brain and heart function will operate at a negative and you will suffer more from hypoxia.
Tough Core - Your opponent will be less likely to hit your organs.

Well Spoken - You get a bonus to all language checks.

Agoraphilia - You will receive a bonus to all checks when you are outside.

Endurance Swimmer - When in a room that has water as its terrain, you will receive a stamina boost.

Weak Swimmer - When in a room that has water as its terrain, you will use up more stamina.
Fast Swimmer - You get a bonus to movement speed when the terrain has water.

Tunnel Rat - You are as comfortable underground and in tight spaces as a rat, and have a lot less difficulty navigating and operating in such environments than other people do. You can also fit into marginally smaller spaces than your size would otherwise allow.

Wide Shoulders - You struggle to fit through doors and entries. Your shoulders are too wide! You will be unable to fit through normal doors.

Other Merits

Each of the following merits can be chosen. They will each cost some amount of build points and require you to pick 1 category 1 flaw.

Shield Wall - You know how to work with others to form a shield wall, giving a bonus to shields if someone else in your party also has shield wall. Cost: 100bp
Favoured Enemy - Available enemies include wolves, wargs, bears, boars, warthogs, uruks, trolls, and undead. You will receive a +5 to any hostile actions toward those enemies. You may only have 1 favoured enemy. Cost: 50bp
Combat Specialist - This merit will give you a +5 to one combat skill of your choice. This makes you a specialist in your chosen combat skill. You may choose: Daggers, Light-Blade, Long-Blade, Heavy-Blade, Light-Bludgeon, Heavy-Bludgeon, Bludgeon, Light-Axe, Axe, Heavy-Axe, Short-Spear, Long-Spear, Throwing, Shortbow, Longbow, Parry, Dodge, Shields. Cost: 150bp
Berserk - You will receive a 15 bonus to all checks when in combat. You will be required to pick the Berserk Flaw which will give you a 10 malus to all defensive checks while in combat. Cost: 100bp
